Every June for the last 5 years, the South Simcoe Arts Council has hosted the Battle of the Brushes. This year, they will do it again!
Lisa Rosati, (SSAC Coordinator) describes the Battle as “a sport for visual artists”. She says participating is an achievement in and of itself.
Taking place in Downtown Alliston, on a hot summer day in June, it is exhilarating to watch the artists create their paintings as everyone watches; doing so in only 30 minutes!
Everyone I spoke with about last year’s Battle said it was fun.
Isolde Ryan, last year’s winner, is also a member of the SSAC Wordsmiths. Isolde, who usually paints in oils, says that Lisa convinced her to participate. Isolde is currently writing a book about her Uncle Herbert’s fascinating life. Tracey Sinclair, who took second place last year says that for her, the Battle is the Official Start to the Summer! She went on to say that it is a great opportunity to have fun and share her love of art with the community. Indeed, watching all of the artists create is quite the show!
Other participants, such as Antonio Lampreia, said that making it to the second round gave him a great feeling of accomplishment.
Adrienne Baldassarra, who also made it to the second round last year, won first place in 2014. That November, she took over Small Inspirations Art Studio, where she now has classes for adults and children.
Participating Artists must bring their own brushes, The SSAC provides the canvas (18’ X 24’) on an easel; and 5 colours of acrylic paint.
This year’s Battle of the Brushes is Saturday June 18. Come one, come all! Register soon, and good luck!
