On April 16th, The South Simcoe Arts Council (SSAC) Wordsmiths won Best Costumes at The Next Step’s Grate Groan-up Spelling Bee! Dian Bowers was an amazing Queen of Hearts, and Charlene Ryan, an incredible Mad Hatter. As Alice, all I really had to do, was be there wearing the beautiful blue skirt and white apron that Dian kindly made for me. We effortlessly transformed into Wordsmith Wonderland.
Thirteen teams participated this year, all with cleaver names and ingenious costumes, with prizes for best spellers, (1st, 2nd and 3rd place); the most team spirit, and of course, best costumes. So that no one was excluded, everyone in attendance was invited to participate in a 10-word “play-along”, if they wanted to test their spelling prowess.
Everyone who attended had lots of laughs. They also took the Bee quite seriously, however, never losing sight of the reasons for the fundraiser, or for the programs that Next Step Literacy provides; including assistance with upgrading reading and writing skills; to computer skills.
A big thank you to WD Potatoes for sponsoring us, and for reaching out to the SSAC for us to participate. Thanks also to Jan Atkinson, June Chambers and Isolde Ryan for your enthusiastic support! it was a pleasure to represent the South Simcoe Arts Council and the Wordsmiths. We are already looking forward to next year!
The Club at Bond Head provided the perfect venue for this fundraiser, with a delicious roast beef dinner, that included a picturesque sunset for many of us facing the windows from our seats.A big thank you to WD Potatoes for sponsoring Wordsmith Wonderland, and for reaching out to the SSAC for us to participate. Thanks also goes out to Jan Atkinson, June Chambers and Isolde Ryan for your enthusiastic support!
